№17 Roitham

"Small impressive Traunfall tour" – the so-called Traunfall is located between the two towns of Steyrermühl and Roitham. The waterfall has a drop of around twelve metres and a length of around 200 metres. Due to the gradient, the Traunfall was a natural obstacle to shipping for a long time. In 1311 it was made navigable for the first time. It was not until the 16th century, during the final expansion, that it became "navigable" or "good". The passage through this raft lane takes around 54 seconds and was very risky with the means available at the time.
A model of the entire system can be found in Schiffleutmuseum in Stadl-Paura. Everything was built by the master wood and hydraulic engineer Thomas Seeauer from Bad Goisern. Today nothing remains of the fall channel. Like many wooden buildings on and along the Traun, it fell victim to modernization.
Today, an underground watercourse runs along the old canal, which is used to power the “Traunfall” hydroelectric power station. The artificial rock wall and some metal struts still bear witness to times gone by.
To explore this spectacular part of the Traun, we recommend a short walk from the Traunfall car bridge to the Traunfall wooden bridge, then on to the Raftsman Madonna and St. Nicholas Chapel, as well as to the Chorinski Cross.
At the end of the short tour, in the fish frying hut (at the bridgehead of the Traunfall car bridge), there is a mackerel served in a purist manner on paper.
